Tempo Walk Hands-Free Caddy
It’s a beautiful day at the golf course. You tee off, driving the ball in a long arc down the fairway. Behind you, an electric motor hums, wheels start to turn. A robot caddie brings over your golf bag and offers you a cigar. It’s called the Club Car Tempo Walk, an electronic assistant that follows you around the links, hefting your cigar and golf accessories so you can focus on your swing.
Tempo Walk carries more than your clubs. It also has a tray for your cigars, lighter, cigar cutter, travel humidor, portable ashtray—anything you don’t want weighing you down while you’re walking or taking a shot. It comes equipped with a touchscreen tablet with GPS yardage, a USB charger for your phone, divot repair kit, cup holders and a cooler for drinks.
While you stroll the course, Tempo Walk trails four to five feet behind you. It knows the way via a small radio frequency transmitter attached to your belt. The robot automatically stops if something obstructs its sensors or you flip the switch on the transmitter—giving you space to line up a shot or read the green. The Tempo Walk runs on a lithium-ion battery capable of completing 36 holes before recharging.
Club Car sells its Tempo Walk devices to golf courses, which typically rent the units to golfers for around the same price as a golf cart. “If a course charges each golfer $20 per 18-holes to use a golf cart, we typically see them charge $15 to $20 per 18-holes for the Tempo Walk,” says David Hules, Club Car’s Golf portfolio director.
The company doesn’t publish its pricing, so golfers interested in purchasing their own Tempo Walk should talk to their local golf course. “Have your golf course pro contact their Club Car sales manager,” Hules advises.
