The first post went up just before 11 a.m. on Monday. The second post, a little after lunch. Less than 24 hours later they had combined for well over 1 million likes on Instagram.
The posts were images of musician and actor Nick Jonas, the September/October cover of Cigar Aficionado magazine, holding and smoking a cigar. To say they sparked attention is a major understatement. By 9 a.m. this morning, the images had been liked 1.23 million times on Jonas’ Instagram page. In the 27-year history of Cigar Aficionado, no other cover has ever drawn such attention on social media.
Jonas, who turns 27 years old next week, is the youngest person ever to hold a cigar on the cover of the magazine, which debuted in the fall of 1992. The magazine tends to feature cover stars who are older, including legendary actors Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Michael Jordan, the world’s most famous athlete.
Although he’s young, Jonas has been in the limelight for more than half of his life. He was signed to a music contract when he was 11 years old and became a household name when he was 13, playing with his two older brothers in the pop group The Jonas Brothers. They later broke up, and Jonas embarked on a solo career, expanding into acting in television and films.
Today, he is in the midst of a worldwide reunion tour with The Jonas Brothers, and this fall he will be among the stars in the World War II movie Midway. He’s been smoking cigars since he was 18, and he recently launched the Villa One Tequila brand, another one of his adult passions.
“First person under 30 to hold a cigar on the cover of one of my favorite magazines,” Jonas wrote to his 27 million followers. “So pumped about this one!”
The issue with Nick Jonas is going in the mail to subscribers now and will be on newsstands September 24.
