Diamond-Shaped Cigar From Alec Bradley

One of Alec Bradley Cigar Co.'s early successes was Trilogy, a triangular-shaped cigar that helped solidify the company's reputation as an innovator.

This fall, the company will once again show its creativity with the release of Nica Puro Diamond Rough Cut, a limited-edition cigar that has been molded into the shape of a diamond.

An extension of the Nica Puro brand, which debuted in 2012, Diamond is rolled with the same all-Nicaraguan blend as its parent line, only with an extra leaf added to the filler. It will be 6 1/4 inches long by 54 ring gauge, retail for $7.75, and come in boxes of 16, of which only 3,000 are being produced.

According to Sam Phillips, vice president of marketing for Alec Bradley, the inspiration for the cigar's diamond shape came from the rollers at Plasencia Cigars, the factory in Nicaragua where Diamond will be produced. Factory workers there apply a rolling technique known as the "accordion method" where each leaf is folded in a wavy pattern, in a shape reminiscent of an accordion. Or, to brand owner Alan Rubin and his right-hand man Ralph Montero, a diamond.

The cigars will ship in November.

"I can see Rocky Patel trying something like this. "Hey, put the band on a little differently on that box press and tell everyone that we have a new diamond line of cigars."" —September 26, 2014 16:47 PM
"This is a joke, right?" —September 22, 2014 19:10 PM
"What ev....different shape but enjoyed several of these on my Hilton Head, SC vacation this summer and they were wonderful. Marketing ploy but same darn fine smoke!" —September 17, 2014 03:38 AM
"Fail. Someone at Alec Bradley needs to find a new line of marketing work. Maybe in selling office cubicles as office diamonds." —September 16, 2014 16:47 PM
"Square, diamond, Shreddie shaped, sharp box press. All sound about right to me. More hype." —September 12, 2014 03:31 AM
"I would be impressed with a Triangle or another shape (no not really sounds annoying to smoke). But you might as well just have squished some regular rolled cigars and call them the Ellipse Series for an easy gimmick promo. I also feel for the people who have pitch this by essentially smoking a box pressed sideways and convincing us it's "diamond" shaped with a straight face." —September 11, 2014 14:34 PM
"Mark G., I agree. Thought maybe I was seeing who got too. Sure looks square to me." —September 9, 2014 17:42 PM

"Reminds me of the marketing ploy when they released Diamond Shreddies." —September 9, 2014 01:03 AM
"Love AB's stuff but I have to ask how this diamond different than a square turned 90deg? Looks like a sharp box press to me, I must be missing something." —September 8, 2014 19:43 PM
