Alec Bradley Cigars is adding a new twist to this year's Black Market Filthy Hooligan, the company's annual limited-edition St. Patrick's Day cigar.
While past iterations of Filthy Hooligan have been covered only in green-hued candela wrapper, the 2016 edition will be a barber-pole cigar, the first ever from Alec Bradley. The fourth iteration of Filthy Hooligan intertwines green candela wrapper from Honduras with dark, brown leaf cultivated from Nicaragua's Jalapa Valley.
"This year, I wanted to create a totally different version of the Filthy Hooligan," said Alan Rubin, president of Alec Bradley cigars.
Measuring 6 inches by 50 ring gauge, the 2016 Filthy Hooligan will retail for $8.50 and is a tweaked version of the company's Black Market blend, as it uses fillers from Honduras and Panama along with an Ecuadoran Sumatra binder. The result is a brawnier flavor profile that Rubin believes will have broader appeal.
"The unique flavor of a candela wrapper is something that every cigar smoker should experience at least once," said Rubin. "Add the dark Jalapa wrapper and it's not only more flavorful, but the barber-pole form can also be very appealing visually. When it comes to just a green cigar, we've been there, done that."
As in previous years, the 2016 Filthy Hooligan was rolled at Tabacos de Oriente in Danlí, Honduras and will be packed in green, wooden crates that hold 22 cigars. Only 2,000 boxes will be released, and the cigar goes on sale on St. Patrick's Day, March 17.
