The Return of La Flor Dominicana Salomones

At least two years have passed since the last shipment of La Flor Dominicana Salomones, grand, curvy cigars made by hand at Tabacalera La Flor S.A. in Tamboril, Dominican Republic. In a little more than one week, the cigars will return at the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers trade show in Las Vegas.

Litto Gomez, who co-owns the La Flor Dominicana brand with his wife, Ines Lorenzo-Gomez, said the cigars that will be sold at the show have been aging for several years. There are two versions, natural and maduro.

The cigars, in their youth, are powerhouses, made with tobacco grown on Gomez's farm in La Canela, Dominican Republic. The cigars have been rated three times in Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider, with the natural version outscoring the maduro. The maduro rated 89 points, while the natural has rated 92 and 95. The 95-point score—classic on the Cigar Aficionado scale—came in an April 2009 taste test.

"The cigar opens with lots of strong leather flavor complemented by a progression of rich cocoa, black cherry and licorice notes. Bold, complex and resonant," read the note.

The cigars, which have pointed heads like torpedos, curved and bulbous bottoms and a pointy tip reminiscent of some perfectos, are very difficult to roll, requiring the most skilled of cigarmakers. The Salomon shape was invented in the Partagás Factory in Cuba years ago, and has appeared on cigars bearing the Partagás and Cuaba brands, and several others made outside of Cuba.
