Steuben, the country’s most prestigious glass manufacturer, has fabricated crystal pieces for the White House, Major League Baseball and now, with the creation of two crystal ashtrays, your smoking room.
The Double (pictured) and Quad ashtrays, though far from cheap, were inspired by what Steuben calls the Mad Men era—a time, the company says, when “gentlemen retired to the study for after-dinner cigars.”
The Double, designed by famed artisan Neil Cohen, is not only stunning, but practical. It has enough grooves to rest six lit cigars and a trough, cut diagonally out of the crystal base, deep enough to hold all that ash.
The Quad is perhaps a bit more traditional with its square shape and grooves placed on each edge. Shaped by Joel Smith, the Quad begs to be placed on a lounge table with four chairs arranged around it. Both ashtrays show no imperfections in the crystal.
If you are having doubts about using a crystal ashtray, consider the material’s advantages. Crystal can be easily cleaned and its durable and not subject to stains and since glass is subjected to extremely high temperatures during its making, it naturally is resistant to a burning cigar tip.
The Double retails for $860 and the Quad sells for $980. You can buy direct from steuben.com, or wherever high-quality crystal is sold.
