Smoking Ban Takes Effect in Turkey

Last Saturday the clocks struck midnight, and smoking in Turkey's bars and restaurants became illegal.

That was when a grace period granted to these types of businesses so they had time to conform to the law ended.

Since May 2008, smoking has been prohibited in public transportation areas and offices.

In an effort to encourage compliance, fines of roughly $40 will be given to first-time offenders caught smoking indoors, while fines for venues range from $400 to $4,000.
