To the victor go the spoils. Xander Schauffele took advantage of the old adage after winning the Ryder Cup with Team U.S.A. on Sunday. The American golfer was the only team member who sparked up a cigar once the trophy was delivered.
This past Ryder Cup marks the ninth time Team U.S.A. has taken the award. And along with the lone cigar were two big bottles of Moët & Chandon Champagne, which were popped right on the course in Haven, Wisconsin at Whistling Straits.
The golf competition takes place every other year, so it’s essentially the World Cup of golf with teams from Europe and the United States competing to see who can strike the ball the best. The United States’ nine trophies are almost equal to Europe’s total of 11. The team included 12 players whose points all contributed to the victory over the weekend.
Golf and cigars are famous friends, even though it’s somewhat rare to see smokes pulled out during a professional outing. However, it’s no surprise that Xander took this opportunity to celebrate in style.
