Review: Boveda Smart Sensor

Review: Boveda Smart Sensor

Mold. Beetles. Cracked wrappers. Soggy tobacco. These are the words that make cigar lovers cringe—and they all share a common cause: an unkempt humidor.

Boveda Inc. has already redefined cigar storage with its patented two-way humidity packs. The disposable inserts that regulate and maintain relative humidity (unlike a traditional humidifier, which only introduces humidity) have become a household name among cigar smokers. Now the company has a product that allows tech-savvy connoisseurs to monitor their humidor conditions via their smartphones.

The Boveda Smart Sensor is a Bluetooth-powered device that tracks the temperature and humidity levels inside of your humidor and transmits the data directly to an app downloaded to your iOS or Android device. Given its accuracy, convenience and price (just $49.99 for the complete kit), the Smart Sensor is a great add-on for those who want to remain extra vigilant when it comes to the state of their humidity. Plus, you can preserve the humid air inside of your humidor by checking its conditions without opening the lid.

The most important aspect of this product is the push notification feature that alerts the user when a humidor falls outside of its desired range. Upon installing the Smart Sensor, the app will prompt you to set a minimum and maximum level for both humidity and temperature. If the humidor falls outside of this range, an alert will be sent to your phone letting you know that upkeep is required.

The Smart Sensor also keeps a record of the temperature and humidity levels inside of your humidor. The data can be analyzed hourly, daily and monthly, so you can evaluate how conditions are altered throughout the day or as the seasons change.

The Smart Sensor allows users to monitor relative humidity, left, and temperature, center, in real time. There is also a reorder feature, right, for Boveda humidity packs.

Prospective buyers should beware that the Bluetooth technology only carries a range of about 100 feet. The Smart Sensor, however, can still be monitored remotely if the Boveda app is accessed from a secondary device. In other words, if you leave your tablet within range of your humidor, you can use your smartphone to access the information from anywhere in the world. This feature, however, requires users to have a tablet or additional smartphone than can be left within the 100-foot vicinity of the humidor at all times.

Setting up the device is quick and easy: Download the Boveda app and use the Bluetooth setting on your phone to link the app to your Smart Sensor. If you’re planning on using multiple devices, you can name each sensor to match the humidor you will be monitoring (“Cuban Cigars”, “Aging Cigars,” etc.).

The final step is calibrating the sensor. Boveda’s One-Step Calibration Kit, which is included in the Smart Sensor Starter Kit, simplifies this task and produces extremely accurate results. All you have to do is place the 75 percent relative humidity pack and Smart Sensor inside the air-tight pouch and let it sit for 24 hours. After that, use the provided Velcro strips to fasten the Smart Sensor to the inside lid of your humidor, or simply place it among your cigars. The device is no larger than a book of matches, so it doesn’t take up much space.

The Smart Sensor Starter Kit also includes a four-pack of 60-gram Boveda bags (with the option of 65 percent, 69 percent, 72 percent and 75 percent relative humidity). The Boveda app also has an auto reorder feature so you can have fresh humidity packs delivered to your home or office on a recurring basis.

Should you choose to use the product inside multiple humidors, additional Smart Sensors can be purchased for $39.99.
