Abe Flores, brand owner of PDR Cigars, is reblending his 1878 line and packaging it in eye-catching new boxes for a release called PDR 1878 Recordando a Santiago Edicíon. Translating to “Remembering Santiago,” the new edition will be on its way to retailers next week.
The upcoming line was made in tribute to the people of the Dominican Republic, and the boxes are adorned with artwork created by Fabian Barrantes. The lid depicts a red Cadillac along with the Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración, a monument located in the Dominican city of Santiago.
“2020 has been a hard and eventful year for everyone,” Flores told Cigar Aficionado. “Due to travel bans, most of our friends and cigar aficionados who typically take time to fly to Santiago [for the ProCigar Festival] to see our farms and factory were not able to do so. I decided to work with Fabian to recreate his artistic vision… and to bring a little bit of our city to the rest of the world.”
The reblended PDR 1878 Recordando a Santiago Edicíon comes in four lines:
- Capa Natural, rolled with an Ecuador Connecticut shade wrapper and Dominican Criollo ’98 binder and filler.
- Capa Oscura, which consists of an Ecuadoran Oscuro wrapper, Dominican Habano-seed binder and Dominican Corojo filler.
- Capa Sun Grown, wrapped in a sun-grown cover leaf from Ecuador around a Dominican Criollo ’98 binder and Dominican Corojo filler.
- Capa Madura, which comes in a Mexican San Andrés wrapper that cloaks Dominican Criollo ’98 binder and filler.
Each of the lines previously were six sizes, but are now being streamlined to three: Robusto, measuring 5 inches by 52 ring gauge; Toro, 6 by 52; and Double Magnum, 6 by 60. Suggested retail prices range from $6.41 to $7.80 per cigar.
PDR 1878 Recordando a Santiago Edicíon is made at the PDR Cigars factory in the Dominican Republic and ships in 20-count boxes. Production will run 5,000 boxes of each size per year. Flores intends to produce the cigars until regular travel to the Dominican Republic resumes, which he doesn’t think will happen until 2023.
