New Cohiba Pirámides Extra Now Arriving On Market

The new Cohiba Pirámides Extra, the first figurado in the regular-production Cohiba line, is making its way to market. The cigars have gone on sale at a limited number of cigar shops, and their full-fledged arrival is expected by the middle of this month.

The Pirámides Extra is a new size, or vitola, for Cuba, measuring about 6 5/16 inches long by 54 ring gauge. Standard Cuban pirámides (the most famous is the Montecristo No. 2) run slightly thinner and shorter, measuring 6 1/8 inches by 52.

The Cohiba Pirámides Extra was the star of the opening night at February’s Habanos Festival. There, the audience was treated to a preview tasting of the smoke.

The cigars come packed with some elements found on Cohiba Behikes, with the Taino head on the cigar band, some holograms to deter counterfeiters and glorious, stately packaging.

Like Behikes, these Cohibas are also quite expensive, with prices ranging from about $350 to $500, depending on the country and local taxes. They went on sale last week at the Casa del Habano in London, which still had them in stock this morning, priced at £287 ($456) for a box of ten, and £33.70 ($54) for a single stick. A Swiss retailer that had them in stock went through a shipment in two days. There they sold for $435 a box. Elsewhere in Europe, some retailers are expecting prices of $350 a box. Casa del Habano stores in Mexico have been selling them for a week, where they are retailing for about $450 per box.

Cuba has put considerable emphasis on the Cohiba brand in recent years, delivering high profile cigars with very high prices. Most have lived up to expectations with very high ratings from Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Insider. The Cohiba 1966 Edición Limitada, released last year, scored 94 points in both publications. The Cohiba Behike BHK 52, unveiled in 2010, scored 97 points and was named Cigar Aficionado’s No. 1 cigar of 2010.

Look for a rating soon in an upcoming issue of Cigar Insider.

Note: The original version of this story, published on September 5, had an error about the blend of the new cigar. The Cohiba Pirámides Extra is not made with any medio tiempo tobacco. Habanos says that Cuba reserves its medio tiempo for use in the Cohiba Behike line of cigars.

"Just paid 295 Euros for a box in Munich. $383/box US$" —October 8, 2012 15:30 PM
"What will happen to Cohiba prices, or all Cubans for that matter, if/when they would be allowed back into the world's biggest consumer market??!! UP big time >> smoke as many as you can now :-)))" —September 18, 2012 16:30 PM
"RE: Nolan Perry. The Behike 56 is $97 per cigar in Ottawa Canada. The Padron 1926 Series 1 Maduro is priced the same in Ottawa. We live in a very different cigar world up here." —September 9, 2012 18:46 PM
"I agree with Nolan. In my country you can buy Montis #2 for $12 dollars at Casa del Habano and the Cohibas that start at double that price are not twice as good being a different cigar. Even at $6.00 bucks or less you can get great smokes like the Padilla Habano, lately one of my favorites." —September 7, 2012 05:59 AM
"As the owner of La Casa del Habano Malaysia, I can't wait to receive our shipment. They may be expensive but it's those people that want the exclusivity of having this cigar that ensure it completely selling out the first shipment. Just like how the waiting list for a new Lamborghini is years long despite the crazy price." —September 7, 2012 00:57 AM
"Over rated and over priced, you guys in Canada can keep them for those prices, There is just too much good stuff in the $10-$15 range, anything above that I'll stick to what the Padron family is making." —September 6, 2012 19:39 PM
"Very pricey but I have to say their Cohiba's of this nature have performed well. Looking forward to trying. " —September 6, 2012 19:22 PM
"I agree, much too expensive. I still have a Behike 54 in my humidor which I purchased over a year ago. Because of its price, I am hesitant to smoke it because I am not one who can readily afford spending $60 plus dollars on a cigar. IMO, go with the Partagas line. They too are coming out with new sizes and are much more affordable. On the other hand, I consider this a minor problem to have as a cigar fan as I am greatful we are able to at least purchase Cubans 'north of the border' as our neighbors to the south can not...yet. " —September 6, 2012 18:44 PM
"much too expensive... however, what else can we expect from Cohiba? :)" —September 6, 2012 11:13 AM
"As a follow up, I heard this morning that more Pirámides Extras arrived in the UK." —September 6, 2012 09:47 AM
