New All-Nicaraguan Romeo y Julieta

Oct 9, 2013 | By G. Clay Whittaker

For the first time ever, Altadis U.S.A. is releasing a version of it's famed Romeo y Julieta brand made entirely of Nicaraguan tobacco.

The RyJ by Romeo y Julieta is a Nicaraguan puro constructed with a double binder of Estelí and Jalapa leaf and fillers from Jalapa, Estelí, and La Mia. Altadis says the wrapper, also Nicaraguan, is grown exclusively for the company, though they are not sharing the specific region of origin.

This is the second addition to the company's Romeo y Julieta portfolio in recent years. The last iteration, Romeo by Romeo y Julieta, sported an Ecuadoran wrapper and took third place in our 2012 Top 25 list.

RyJ, which the company says is rich, bold, and spicy, will come in three sizes: Bully Grande, 5 by 54; Toro, 6 by 52, and Piramide, 6 1/8 by 54. They will retail for between $8 to $8.75, and should ship later this month.

"There can never be too many Nicaraguan puros. This sounds like a fantastic smoke, and I look forward to its release. @TheGoodLifeGuy" —October 16, 2013 22:06 PM
"Sounds like RyJ definitely did not want to fall to the wayside after Davidoff of all brands took the leap. Speaking of Nica and JD, looking forward to seeing Herrera Esteli in CA's top 25, possibly top 5 for 2013. Betcha!" —October 16, 2013 01:53 AM
"Those look pretty good, in fact, JD got me hooked on Nicaraguan tobacco (before I used to smoke mostly Habanos & Dominicans)! That being said, DE4L!!!" —October 16, 2013 01:18 AM
"only smoke cigars w/ Nicaraguan tobacco, so will definitely try this one" —October 15, 2013 19:09 PM
"Curious to compare this to already existing Nicaraguan cigars that have been in the market. Also cracked up at JD's post." —October 15, 2013 18:20 PM
"Interesting ... Davidoff, La Gloria, Romeo ... Glad I moved there in 1998 I guess. There is nothing as rich and bold as Nicaraguan filler tobaccos. Best, JD" —October 11, 2013 04:44 AM
"I can't get enough of the Nicaraguan leaf, let me tell you. This cigar looks downright delicious and can't wait to try them when they hit the shelves. When will they be released by the way David?" —October 9, 2013 19:14 PM
