Nat Sherman to Open Cigar Lounge Atop Knickerbocker Hotel

Nat Sherman's New York City footprint is expanding.

The company is opening a cigar lounge on the rooftop of the legendary Knickerbocker Hotel, which has been fully restored to its former glory and is slated to re-open this fall.

The Nat Sherman lounge will not be the sole occupier of the rooftop space, but will actually be within St. Cloud, a 7,500-square-foot rooftop bar that is the brainchild of celebrity chef (and unabashed cigar lover) Charlie Palmer.

"We've worked with Charlie before to develop the full cigar program at Aureole in Las Vegas," said Michael Herklots, vice president of Nat Sherman. "He contacted us about a year ago and said he was interested in adding a cigar element to St. Cloud."

Along with a bird's-eye view of Times Square, the lounge will be stocked with a selection of Nat Sherman cigars chosen to complement the food and drink offerings from St. Cloud. Herklots said that he will be creating a cigar menu of six to eight recommended pairings.

"It will be a full representation of the Nat Sherman blends," said Herklots. "Very focused, but an all encompassing program for them." Additionally, guests will be able to purchase cigars at Charlie Palmer at The Knick, the restaurant Palmer is opening on the hotel's fourth floor. Smoking, however, will only be allowed on the rooftop.

Herklots described the space as "a box surrounding another box." He said the main bar and seating area for St. Cloud will be inside a square space separated by glass on all sides and the roof. Food and drink are going to be served inside, but a full service dining experience will also be offered on a terrace that surrounds the glass box. It is this terrace where the Nat Sherman branded lounge will be.

"There'll be signage, but it will be understated," said Herklots.

He also mentioned that there will be plenty of heat lamps for the colder nights.
