My Favorite Cigar
Joe Gannascoli • Actor & Chef
Rocky Patel Sun Grown Maduro
Joe Gannascoli rose to fame as a member of the hit HBO series “The Sopranos,” playing Mob captain Vito Spatafore, who runs into trouble with both his New Jersey family and a New York crime family after his character comes out of the closet. But before he acted, he cooked, including a stint at Commander’s Palace in New Orleans, and even wrote A Meal to Die For: A Culinary Novel of Crime. He also occasionally cooks “Sopranos”-themed meals for fans of the show.
Gannascoli smokes cigars just about every day, and likes them strong and dark, with a thick ring gauge. His favorite is the Rocky Patel Sun Grown Maduro. But he moves around, especially when he runs out. “I’m waiting for my delivery,” he says. “As we speak, I’m smoking a CAO Flathead 770.”
His first cigars were thin. “I played around with De Nobilis,” he says. His cigar smoking got serious around 2001, when he was with “The Sopranos,” a show with no shortage of cigar-smoking actors, on screen and off. He developed a taste for Rocky Patels around 2008, and hasn’t looked back since.
