Miami-Made Panetela from La Palina

Miami-Made Panetela from La Palina

La Palina is set to launch a limited batch of cigars, each of them made in Miami by the same cigar roller. Called the La Palina Collection Goldie Laguito No. 2, the cigars were all rolled by Maria Sierra, who learned the art of rolling thin, elegant smokes at the hallowed home of the size, El Laguito, the Cuban cigar factory in the Miramar neighborhood of Havana.

Sierra started rolling cigars in 1967.

The Goldie measures 6-inches long by 38 ring gauge, a shape known as a Laguito No. 2 in Cuba. Other Laguito No. 2s include Cohiba Corona Especiales and Montecristo Especial No. 2s.

“I love that size,” said La Palina owner Bill Paley in a Q&A published in the March 6 Cigar Insider, which broke the news about the new size when it was still in pre-release form. “I thought it would be interesting to make a line with a single roller, where each box is signed and numbered by the roller.”

The cigars ship on Monday, and they will be limited to 1,000 boxes, each containing 10 cigars. The suggested retail price is $150 per box, or $15 per cigar.

Each smoke was rolled by Sierra at El Titan de Bronze, a minuscule cigar factory in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. Willy Herrera, formerly of El Titan de Bronze and now with Drew Estate, helped with the blend, which includes some medio tiempo tobacco.

The smokes are crafted with flag caps (that look like fans), and consist of a blend of Ecuadoran Habano wrapper, Ecuador binder, and a blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan filler.

"Is it a strong tasting smoke? Will it be available in Canada? " —June 13, 2012 23:45 PM
"It should also be mentioned that Maria Sierra was one of the first female rollers in Cuba, one of the original thirty women that were chosen under Castro. She worked at the most popular cigar factory (El Laguito), the home of Cohiba, and as mentioned, rolled the Laguito No. 2 for them. These are absolutely beautiful cigars and I highly recommend trying to get some before they are sold out!" —June 13, 2012 09:24 AM
"I had the pleasure of meeting Maria at El Titan De Bronze in April. They roll one of our lines as well. She told me her story first hand as we drank cafe cubano, and I watched her roll the Goldie. Phenominal story, phenominal woman, phenominal factory, and phenominal smoke." —June 6, 2012 11:54 AM
