Macanudo Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Inspirado Red

Macanudo Celebrates 50th Anniversary with Inspirado Red

Macanudo, one of the world’s most famous cigar brands, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. In honor of the milestone, General Cigar is launching Macanudo Inspirado Red, a cigar the company describes as full-bodied with a Nicaraguan-forward blend.

Far from the mild-bodied Macanudo Café that the name “Macanudo” is associated with, Inspirado Red is closer in spirit to Macanudo Inspirado Orange—a more powerful Macanudo released to the U.S. market in 2016 and positioned as a medium- to full-bodied cigar.

“As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Macanudo, we created Macanudo Inspirado Red to speak to the brand’s unique ability to adapt to the preferences of today’s cigar lovers,” said José de Castro, vice president of marketing for the Macanudo brand. “Nicaraguan cigars are hot right now. With Inspirado Red, we show how nimble the brand can be by introducing a unique, Nicaraguan-forward blend to the line.”

Inspirado Red is made with an Ecuadoran Habano ligero cover leaf and blended with a variety of aged filler tobaccos. The company says the cigar contains Nicaraguan leaf from the island of Ometepe that’s been aged twelve years, 10-year-old Honduran leaf from the Jamastran valley and Nicaraguan leaf from Estelí that’s been aged five years. The tobaccos are held by a Nicaraguan binder from Jalapa.

Inspirado Red is launching throughout the U.S. on March 26 and will be available in three sizes: a box-pressed Robusto, at 5 inches by 50 ring ($6.49); Toro, at 6 by 50 ($6.99); and Gigante, 6 by 60 ($7.49). The cigars will ship in 20-count boxes.

Inspirado Red is rolled at STG Estelí, in Nicaragua.

While Macanudo is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the brand is actually older than 50 years. In 1968, General Cigar Co. acquired the Jamaican Temple Hall cigar factory and the Macanudo cigar brand, which was already being produced in small quantities for the British market. General redesigned the Macanudo blend and released it in 1971, transforming it into a popular premium cigar brand for the U.S. market.
