Jaworski Hosting Smoky Super Bowl Party

The biggest game in the National Football League is coming to the New York area, and ESPN analyst and former pro quarterback Ron "Jaws" Jaworski is hosting his annual Jaws Cigar Party for charity.

The event is being held January 30, the Thursday night prior to Super Bowl XLVIII, at 230 Fifth, the posh and spacious Manhattan bar with a cigar-friendly rooftop. The event—this is the fifth time it's been held in the city hosting the Super Bowl—tends to be visited by luminaries in the sports world. Host Jaworski said Sean Payton, John Gruden, Donovan McNabb and Bill Cowher are among the famed athletes and coaches expected to be in attendance.

The venue has indoor and outdoor space: 230 Fifth boasts what must be the largest rooftop bar in all of New York City. "I'm a cigar smoker myself," said Jaworski, who said that he started smoking cigars more than 25 years ago. The former quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles estimated that 75 percent of the people who come to the party enjoy a cigar as well. "People that come to the event are cigar smokers."

As this is the first Super Bowl being played outdoors in a cold, northern region, smoking outdoors at the party presents some challenges. "We are totally prepared," said Jaworski. The venue has various electric heaters located on the rooftop smoking section. Heavy, warm robes will also be provided for guests as they go outdoors to puff, and people can stay inside (without a cigar) if they wish.

Cigars for the event are being provided by Rocky Patel Premium Cigars, General Cigar Co., Quesada Cigars and Miami Cigar & Co., with cigar accessory maker Xikar providing a gift. Cigar industry notables Rocky and Nish Patel, Rick Rodriguez, Nestor Miranda and Terence Reilly are expected to attend. "This event brings together sports fans, professional athletes, and cigar aficionados for an incredible evening that benefits a great cause," said Reilly. "The Quesada family is honored to be a part of it."

Diageo is the exclusive liquor partner for the party, and Johnnie Walker Scotch, Ron Zacapa rum and Ketel One vodka will be poured.

Individual tickets for the event are $500, and proceeds benefit the Jaws Youth Playbook, a foundation created by Jaworski to help improve the lives of at-risk kids in the greater Philadelphia region.
