Ernesto Padilla, a purist when it comes to cigar sizes, is reluctantly dipping his toes into the world of ultra-fat cigars. Although he's admittedly not a fan of ring gauges that stray far north of 50, his new Padilla Cava will have three sizes with ring gauge of 60.
Padilla's move to bring out a line of ultra-fat cigars follows a trend toward ever fatter smokes that has been warmly embraced by cigar lovers across the United States, and to a lesser extent, the world.
Padilla Cava will come in four sizes: There will be a 6 inch long by 60 ring gauge smoke, a 7 by 60 and an 8 by 60. The fourth size will be a robusto, whose final ring gauge has yet to be determined, but it's certain to be in the 50s. The price will be around $6.50 to $8.50 per cigar.
The cigars are being rolled at Tabacalera Oliva, the factory that makes all Oliva brand cigars, plus NuB, Cain and many Padillas. The cigar will feature a wrapper and binder leaf from Ecuador, grown from Havana seed, and Nicaraguan filler tobacco grown by the Olivas.
Padilla told Cigar Insider he hopes to have the cigars out for the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers trade show, which takes place this July in Las Vegas.
