Although the boxes shown here are from the 2020 release, the Year of the Rat cigars coming for 2022 are identical.

According to the Chinese zodiac, this is not the year of the rat, it’s the year of the tiger. The last year of the rat was in 2020, and the next one won’t be until 2032, but Drew Estate doesn’t feel like waiting that long. Next month, the company is bringing back its Liga Privada Unico Serie Year of the Rat cigar, which first came out in 2016, and was re-released in 2020 in accordance with the lunar calendar.

“With music sometimes a new song comes out and you’re like, ‘Yo, hit rewind,’ ” says Drew Estate founder and president, Jonathan Drew. “It’s a testament to a proper beat, the lyrics, the complete-ness … well same thing for Year of the Rat.”

Liga Privada Unico Serie Year of the Rat

The Rats tend to be hot items with Liga Privada smokers, and this year's run of Rats is going to be limited in production (although Drew Estate hasn’t disclosed precisely how many will be released). Like the original, the Year of the Rat is made with a dark, Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and topped with its signature fantail cap. It’s filler of Nicaraguan and Honduran tobacco is brought together by a Brazilian binder. Each cigar measures 5 ½ inches long by 46 ring gauge and comes in 10-count boxes, which retail for $171.20 per box, or $17.12 per cigar.

Retail members of the Drew Diplomat program (approximately 600 locations nationwide) can expect the cigars to arrive at their shops on June 15.
