Davidoff Adds To Nicaragua

Davidoff Nicaragua, the biggest new product launch from Davidoff in many years, is getting two new sizes, one of them a stately figurado, the other a tiny cigar meant for smoking quickly.

The Davidoff Nicaragua Diadema Fina will measure 6 1/2 inches long with a 50 ring gauge at its fattest point, making it the longest in the Davidoff Nicaragua line. The cigars are rolled in the Dominican Republic at the Cigars Davidoff factory, made from an all-Nicaraguan tobacco blend. The smokes have tobacco from the three major growing regions in the country (Estelí, Jalapa and Condega) along with tobacco from the volcanic Nicaraguan island of Ometepe.

Davidoff expects the new Diadema Fina to be on sale worldwide by September 1. They will retail for $17.90 per cigar.

The Davidoff Nicaragua long-filler blend has a good reputation-The Davidoff Nicaragua Toro is Cigar Aficionado's No. 3 cigar of 2013, and it scored 95 points in our blind taste test.

Davidoff also added a tiny smoke called Primeros by Davidoff Nicaragua. Although the cigar bears the Davidoff Nicaragua name, the blend is different. The miniscule cigars (4 1/8 inches long by an ultra-slim 34 ring gauge) are made by hand from a mix of long and short-filler tobaccos. The cigars have Nicaraguan wrappers, Ecuadoran binders and a mix of Dominican and Nicaraguan filler. A maduro version has Nicaraguan and Dominican filler, a binder from Ecuador and a wrapper grown from Sumatra seed in Mexico. They are meant to be quick smokes, lasting about 15 minutes.

The cigars are made using a combination of long and short-filler tobaccos, referred to by Davidoff, and by other cigar companies, as "medium fill." They will retail for $29.90 per tin of six (roughly $5 per cigar), and should reach stores in the United States in July.

Look for a blind tasting of the Davidoff Nicaragua Diadema Fina in an upcoming Cigar Insider.
