Attendees of the Partagás Festival in Havana last week got to smoke the Saint Luis Rey Marquéz, the new Regional Edition made exclusively for Cuba.
The 5 7/8 inch by 54 ring gauge cigar has been released in plain, wooden boxes of 10. According to local sources in Havana, only 7,500 boxes were produced. The box retails for 116 CUCs in Havana's cigar shops, or 11.60 CUC each.
The Saint Luis Rey Marquéz is known in Cuban factories as a Geniales, and in more common street parlance would fall within the Robusto Extra size. The Montecristo Open Eagle is a more common example of the Geniales size. The Geniales format continues the strategy of Habanos S.A. to supply thicker cigars to the world market.
The Saint Luis Rey Marquez is the second Cuban regional cigar to be released in recent years. Enthusiasts will recall the Diplomaticos Excelencia that came out in 2015. It is a standard Robusto size, at 5 by 50. The cigar was full bodied, with a solid core of spicy flavors, and was one the better value smokes available in Havana last year. The price was 86 CUCs for the 10-count box. Habanos produced 7,000 boxes of the Diplomaticos Excelencia, and the cigars can still be found in Havana cigar shops.
