The Cigar Rights of America wants cigar smokers to make their voices heard this election season. In anticipation of the midterm elections taking place on November 6, the CRA has launched a petition that urges Congress to support a premium cigar exemption in its annual spending bill.
The cigar advocacy group has already gathered more than 25,000 petitions, and it’s hoping to reach 100,000 by the time Congress returns to Washington D.C. on November 13. Cigar smokers can visit the CRA’s website and access two pre-written statements—designated for senators and representatives—and submit their petition electronically or by mail.
The CRA is hoping to bring awareness to a provision in the 2019 House Agricultural Appropriations Bill that would prohibit the FDA from using any of its funding to “implement, administer, or enforce” any of the agency’s proposed regulations on “large cigars.”
According to Glynn Loope, executive director of the CRA, the petitions are one last push for cigar smokers to help get an exemption on the bill next year.
