In the mid-1990s, it seemed that cigar dinners were everywhere. But changing laws have cut down severely on such events. On October 15, Aureole in New York City will turn back the clock with a cigar dinner made possible by a new outdoor patio, a cigar-smoking chef and a partnership with Nat Sherman.
Aureole's Birds + Burgundy dinner, being held October 15 at 6:30 p.m., pairs game birds with Burgundies and adds a postprandial cigar course presented by Nat Sherman's Michael Herklots.
The meal is being prepared by Chef Charlie Palmer, a game enthusiast and cigar lover who has spoken at the Big Smoke Las Vegas, and chef Marcus Ware. The five-course lineup of fowl includes quail, partridge and pheasant with such standout Burgundies as a Vincent Dauvissat Chablis Vaillons 2011, a Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Clavoillon 2002 and a Domaine Marquis D'Angerville Volnay Premier Cru 2010.
The smoking will follow the meal on Aureole's new outdoor terrace, a 660-square-foot space that can accommodate up to 70 people. Aureole doesn't allow cigar smoking on the terrace on a daily basis, but the landlord has allowed the smoke for this evening.
