CigarBQue Charity Event Goes Nationwide, Kicks Off in Atlanta

CigarBQue, a charity event based in Chicago, Illinois, that focuses on cuisine, cocktails and cigars, is hitting the road for a nationwide tour. Starting in Atlanta, Georgia, tomorrow, successive events will also take place in Austin, Texas; Chicago, Illinois; Denver, Colorado; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; San Francisco, California and Washington D.C. This is the first year that CigarBQue will be hosted outside of Chicago.

The events benefit the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation, an organization started by the Fuente & Newman families (of Arturo Fuente Cigars and J.C. Newman Cigar Co., respectively) that aims to uplift struggling communities in the Dominican Republic through education, self-empowerment and health care.

"Since the foundation started in 2001, the impact on the community has been amazing," Shanda Lee, vice president of marketing for J.C Newman Cigar Co. told Cigar Aficionado. "Through education and empowerment we are breaking the chains of poverty and teaching a community to not only fend for itself, but also thrive and give back. Many of the students that began as undernourished children with no hope have graduated from high school and are attending college to become doctors and teachers. One student even graduated from college and is now a teacher at the Cigar Family School because she wanted to give back to the community."

CigarBQue acts as a vehicle to move the goals of the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation forward. This year, along with top chefs and highly regarded mixologists, a selection of J.C. Newman's Diamond Crown cigars will be available to guests at all event locations.

"CigarBQue was started by chef Rick Gresh, who felt strongly about the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation and got his chef and mixologist friends to throw an event in 2011," Lee said. "Every year the event has grown and sells out within days. It has turned out to be such a great combination of cuisine and cigars that we thought it would be perfect to take it nationwide with Diamond Crown as the featured cigars."

The first CigarBQue kicks off Thursday, April 23 from 6 p.m to 9 p.m. at the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot in Atlanta, Georgia. For tickets and a tour schedule, visit http://www.cigarbque.com/
