An all-star lineup of top-rated smokes—including the reigning Cigar of the Year and the 2014 Cigar of the Year—will be passed out at the Big Smoke Las Vegas seminars, taking place on Saturday, November 18 and Sunday, November 19 at The Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. A limited number of tickets remain.
The Saturday seminars feature a tasting of top-rated cigars, presented by the people who made them. The morning kicks off when the audience lights up the E.P. Carrillo Selección Oscuro Piramides Royal, presented by Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, who has been making cigars for more than 40 years. The Dominican cigar scored 94 points, and was ranked the No. 4 cigar of 2017.
At the midway point of the Saturday seminar, Rocky Patel will present the No. 2 cigar of 2017, the Rocky Patel Sun Grown Maduro Robusto, which rated 95 points, classic on our 100-point-scale.
The final cigar of Saturday will be the Cigar of the Year, the La Flor Dominicana Andalusian Bull. This large figurado—it measures 6 1/2 inches long by 64 ring gauge—is a flavor bomb of hickory and leather notes, and it rated 96 points. It will be presented by Litto Gomez, the man in the hat, who has been making premium cigars since 1994.
Lunch is sponsored by the team from Drew Estate cigars, who will be handing out five of their harder-to-find cigars: Pappy Van Winkle Lonsdale, Pappy Van Winkle Corona, Liga Privada Velvet Rat, Herrera Esteli Edicion Limitada Lancero and Liga Privada Dirty Rat.
The Sunday seminars begin with a breakfast presentation conducted by star chef Nicole Brisson, of Carnevino, and while there is no smoking during breakfast, La Palina is providing a La Palina Bronze Label Toro that seminar participants can hold onto to smoke at a later time. (All the Big Smoke seminar cigars come in Boveda bags to maintain perfect humidity in the dry desert climate of Las Vegas.)
At the Roll Your Own seminar, Rafael Nodal and the team from Altadis U.S.A. will lead a tutorial on how to make your own cigar. In addition to making a cigar of their own, the seminar guests will get two to smoke, a Montecristo White Toro and a Montecristo Platinum No. 2.
The final seminar of the weekend pairs single malt and blended Scotches of Bacardi with cigars from Oliva. There are four Scotches—Dewar’s 12, Dewar’s 15, Aberfeldy 12 and Craigellachie 13—and two cigars: Cain Daytona cigars and the Oliva Serie V Melanio Figurado, the 2014 Cigar of the Year.
