Casa de Montecristo Acquires Tampa Humidor, Expands Footprint

Owned by Tabacalera USA, Casa de Montecristo has bought another retail location—Tampa Humidor on East Busch Boulevard in Tampa, Florida, making this the 18th brick-and-mortar cigar lounge in the Casa de Montecristo portfolio of tobacconists.

A second Tampa Humidor location is currently under construction on South Howard Avenue. Casa de Montecristo will be taking over that location as well, which is slated to be completed in April. Tampa Humidor’s online business was also part of the acquisition.

Former owner Mike Howe has decided to stay on as an employee of Casa de Montecristo.

“We are thrilled with the acquisition of the Tampa Humidor lounges and www.TampaHumidor.com,” said Steve Lochan, CEO of Casa de Montecristo. “Mike Howe is a great visionary and has built an incredible operation with his brick-and-mortar business, e-commerce site and new location on South Howard. Moreover, the team at Casa is proud to have Mike Howe on board.”

This acquisition is part of Casa de Montecristo’s initiative to expand into the brick-and-mortar retail segment of the cigar industry. In August 2017, Casa de Montecristo purchased Prime Cigar & Wine Bar in Boca Raton, Florida, and struck a naming rights agreement with Arizona-based retailer Churchill’s Fine Cigars. Under the agreement, the four Arizona locations were branded with the Casa de Montecristo name.

“I am very excited about joining the Casa de Montecristo team,” said Howe. “[The] acquisition is definitely going to elevate the adult cigar smoker experience for many in the Tampa Bay area."

Casa de Montecristo opened its first location in 2008. The retail chain includes company-owned stores and licensed-based partnerships with premium cigar retailers around the country.

The Casa de Montecristo stores across the U.S. are run by Tabacalera USA, a subsidiary of tobacco giant Imperial Brands PLC. In addition to the Casas, Tabacalera operates Altadis U.S.A. Inc., Santa Clara and JR Cigar.
