Famed jazz pianist and cigar enthusiast Avo Uvezian is about to turn 87 and to commemorate his birthday, Avo will be releasing The Dominant 13th cigar in just over a month.
Named after a famous and complex jazz chord, the Dominant 13th is a 6 inch by 52 ring toro made with mostly Dominican tobacco and an Ecuadoran wrapper. The blend consists of Piloto, Habano-seed Viso, San Vicente Ligero, Olor Ligero, some Peruvian tobacco and a binder from the Yamasá region of the Dominican Republic—the origin of wrapper leaf for Davidoff’s powerful Puro d’Oro line.
As usual, brand-owner Davidoff of Geneva has spared no expense with the packaging. The box is designed to resemble a music book and opens to reveal 13 cigars and the sheet music for Uvezian’s classic song “Delightful Days.” In addition to the 13 cigars, the box also contains a USB stick containing a movie clip, songs by Avo, a screen saver and a copy of the Avo cigar catalog.
Though set to hit retail shelves in mid-April, the Dominant 13th will be first launched on March 28 at the Grand Havana Room in New York City, as has been the tradition for Avo’s birthday releases. From there, Avo will celebrate with five more events in Orlando, Florida, Westmont, Illinois, Scottsdale, Arizona, and San Antonio, Texas, eventually ending on May 10 in West Bloomfield, Michigan.
The Avo brand was created in 1987. Since 2001 (beginning with the Avo 75th Anniversary cigar) the company has released 11 birthday cigars (this is the twelfth) honoring the musician’s life. The cigar is set to retail for $15 each, or $195 for the box of 13. Only 9,000 boxes have been created for the entire world.
