Indianapolis Bars Go Smoke-Free for Super Bowl

Lawmakers in Indianapolis are mulling a plan that would ban smoking in most of the city’s bars, but it appears unlikely the new law will go into effect in time for the February 5 Super Bowl between the New York Giants and New England Patriots.

The smoking ban proposal expands the city’s 2005 ordinance to include bowling alleys, hotel rooms and bars where food is served, but exempts cigar bars, tobacco shops, hookah bars and some private fraternal organizations. Last Tuesday, the Indianapolis City-County Council Rules and Public Policy Committee voted 5 to 3 to send the measure on to the full council.

While the full city council is expected to meet on January 30, it appears unlikely members will vote on the smoking ban proposal, let alone fast-track the bill in order to enact it before the Super Bowl takes place.

Some establishments, though, are not taking chances and have decided on their own accord to go smoke-free.

According to the Indianapolis Star, the owners of Claddagh Irish Pub and the Slippery Noodle Inn have been smoke-free since 2012 began. Both of the owners, according to the article, said they decided to go smoke-free in order to attract the tourists who will be visiting the city for the Super Bowl.

All politics are local...and if you don't step up, even local politicians will ruin small business. Common sense, liberty, pursuit of happiness....all ideas that represent a great country, are absent in local, state, and federal politics. We need term limits for every elected official!

a big celebration day calls for a great smoke.doesnt make sense to me to ban smoking to try and attract tourists it'll most likely have the opposite effect
