URGENT: WRITE THE FDA

The FDA is trying to smother the handmade cigar industry. We need your help.

If you’re a friend of the cigar, now is the time to write Washington.

The Food and Drug Administration is making it harder and harder for family-owned, handmade cigar companies to produce and sell their products. The new rules are unnecessary and highly political, and they will drive companies out of business, leaving you with fewer choices in your humidor, changing the cigar industry forever.

It needs to stop.

Write the new FDA commissioner, Dr. Scott Gottlieb, and President Donald Trump. Let them know how you feel. Tell them handmade cigars deserve an exemption from FDA control. It’s time to deregulate the handmade cigar industry and let this small, artisanal and venerable business continue without government interference.

SAMPLE LETTER

I am protesting the FDA’s over-regulation of the handmade cigar industry. Keep this family owned and artisanal industry intact and leave handmade cigars alone.

I've voted every election but one local one for 50 years. And still both of your agencies continue to move the nation backwards with your thoughtless, feel good, save the world nonsense. I have the right to buy and smoke my cigars at my option and without impacting others. I want it kept that way unless you can prove ISIS/ISIL/Al Quaeda or some other bunch of low lifes is trying to overrun the world by using the cigars I smoke. I've had enough!

I modified Marvin's letter to be as generic as possible, my fellow cigar aficionado's are welcome to use it as a template:

Dear Dr. Gottlieb,
Congratulations on your May 9, 2017 appointment as FDA commissioner. You step into this role at a crucial time.
As an occasional handmade cigar smoker, I am writing you to urge you to de-regulate the handmade cigar industry. It is composed primarily of small and medium-sized businesses, many of them family owned, which have a long and glorious history dating back to the founding of the Americas.
Recently, the FDA saddled the handmade cigar industry with severe operational restrictions, not the least of which is severely limiting the introduction of new products. Even more restrictions are scheduled to follow in the coming months. All of these prohibitions are starting to strangle the industry as they fear extinction.
In order to comply with the FDA's new restrictions, cigar companies are facing the prospect of enormous new costs—hundreds of thousands of dollars per company—that are onerous, burdensome and most of all unnecessary.
A new study, partially funded by the FDA and published on January 26 in The New England Journal of Medicine, documented that premium cigars are not being smoked by the youth of America. The two-year study looked at the behavior of more than 45,000 people, including 13,651 youths, and found that the number of youths who frequently or regularly smoke handmade cigars was less than one percent—statistically irrelevant. Handmade cigars are enjoyed by adults, period.
Please exempt the handmade family cigar industry from FDA regulation. As a responsible tax paying adult American citizen, there is nothing more enjoyable than a high quality handmade cigar paired with a nice bourbon to celebrate a family or personal milestone. There is no need to regulate an industry that is so small and beneficial.
Very truly yours,

FYI
the idea of tax and import burdens will cause a sharp rise in prices reminiscent of the dry season,
As a result, the smuggling and crime business will jump up and create a new niche that pays off a high-value crime.

We BOTL should definitely band together to fight for our rights, but for those of you who are shaking your fists and yelling at the top of your steaming mad lungs that this is the result of a bunch of pansy libtards infringing your rights, "this is the type of overstepping government that liberal Democrats voted for. Progressives are the new fascists and totalitarian", drain the swamp, etc, etc, etc, please note that current Health and Human Services Secretary Thomas Price, as well as FDA Commisioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb were nominated and appointed to their respective positions by the President of the United States, none other than your friend Donald John Trump.
Philip Bowles Los Banos, CA, USA, June 23, 2017 5:40pm ET
The sample text seems pretty curt, almost rude. It also ignores pipe tobacco, which is subject to the same idiocy. FWIW my sample letter is below:

I am protesting the FDA’s over-regulation of the handmade cigar and artisanal pipe tobacco industry. Please, keep this family owned and artisanal industry intact, and leave handmade cigar and hand blended pipe tobacco makers alone. I understand how the need to keep children from smoking was behind this ill-conceived measure. Nobody thinks that having youngsters smoke is a good idea. Like you, I am appalled at the parasites who deliberately market candy-flavored tobacco products to teenagers, even though I doubt that the flavorings themselves present any separate danger.

However, teenagers are not walking around with $15 cigars or briar pipes filled with hand-blended pipe tobacco! We adults who enjoy these habits in a sane manner know the risks which we are taking, and have made a conscious decision to incur them, as we do when driving a car or undertaking other potentally dangerous activities. The artisans who supply us are following a vocation, the way people who make musical instruments or custom fly rods do. Please allow them to continue running their little businesses, and allow us to continue to support them.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my opinion.
