Total Ban Looming for Atlantic City Casinos

On January 24, the city council in Atlantic City will vote to extend the New Jersey smoking ban to the floors of the city's 12 casinos.

The council was originally set to vote on December 29, but held off to give casinos more time to prepare. If approved by the council on January 24 and signed by Mayor Robert W. Levy Sr., the casinos, which include the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa, Caesars Atlantic City and the Trump Taj Mahal, could go smoke free as early as April 15.

Smoking was banned in New Jersey restaurants, bars and bowling alleys in April of last year after lawmakers approved the New Jersey Clean Indoor Air Act in January, and then Acting Gov. Richard Codey signed it before leaving office later in the month. Casinos were given an exemption to the act because of fears of revenue losses and competition from tribal gaming hot spots in Connecticut and New York State.
