St. Louis Delays Action on Smoking Ban

Posted: July 13, 2009
St. Louis Alderman Gregory Carter, chair of the Health Committee, announced last Thursday that action on a controversial smoking ban bill would be delayed until September.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Carter said the summer break would allow lawmakers to write a bill that might better appeal to smoking ban opponents and proponents.
The bill called for the prohibition of smoking inside restaurants and bars, but much to the chagrin of business owners exempted the two casinos located in downtown St. Louis.
Bar and restaurant owners argued the casino exemption would create unfair business conditions.
To avoid creating unfair condition, officials added a clause in the bill that stated it would only take effect if St. Louis County passed its own smoking ban.
