St. Louis Considers Smoking Ban

City leaders in St. Louis, Missouri, recently heard arguments for a smoking ban proposal that seeks to ban lighting up in restaurants and bars. According to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch account, the ban would exempt outdoor areas as well as the gaming floors of the city's two downtown casinos.

In order to avoid creating an unfair economic environment, City Council leaders said the ban would only go into effect if St. Louis County were to pass similar legislation.

St. Louis County attempted to ban smoking in 2005 and 2006, but both attempts were unsuccessful. The city remains one of the largest in the nation without a ban on smoking.

The American Cancer Society opposes the bill, saying the exemptions make the bill too weak.

Even if the City Council does pass the bill, there will be no action on it for two months, as the council takes its summer break on July 10.
