Smaller Plantings for Some Dominican Growers

The two tropical storms that hit the Dominican Republic this year -- including one that struck in December, long after the end of the hurricane season -- have caused some growers to believe the 2007/08 harvest will be smaller than the previous season.

Tropical Storm Olga slammed the Dominican Republic with winds and rains on December 11. In October, Tropical Storm Noel hit the country with flooding rains. Each storm wreaked havoc on the local population, washing away some homes, and caused serious problems for growers.

Cigar Insider spent last week in the Cibao Valley, the cigar tobacco—growing region of the Dominican Republic, meeting with cigarmakers and tobacco growers and visiting farms in three areas. This lush, fertile valley is the source of the country's filler and binder tobaccos, as well as a growing number of wrappers, many of them quite strong.
