Padrón Launches Serie 1926 Ten Packs

Padrón Cigars Inc. is putting some of its priciest cigars in special ten-pack boxes for Father's Day. Padrón Serie 1926 No. 1, No. 2, No. 6 and No. 9 cigars began leaving Miami in boxes of 10 this week. All are also available in their original boxes, each of which contain 24 cigars.

The Padrón 1926 No. 9 was Cigar Aficionado's Cigar of the Year for 2007, with a rating of 97 points.

"We wanted to have a different type of packaging for Father's Day," said Jorge Padrón, president of the Miami company, which makes all of its cigars in Nicaragua. "Getting 10 cigars might be a more accessible gift."

The four Serie 1926 cigars being sold in boxes of 10 have suggested retail prices from $12.70 to $20.70 per cigar, or $127 to $207 per box of ten.

Prices have been on Padrón's mind lately, especially due to the SCHIP expansion that caused the federal excise tax on cigars to increase by 35 cents per cigar on April 1.

"We've been very conscientious of how we approached this SCHIP tax," said Padrón. "We wanted to protect and reward the loyalty of our employees, our consumers and our retailers." While the company passed on the tax increase of its rarest cigars, they ate much of it on their highest volume Padrón line. "I'm absorbing 15 to 30 cents on almost all of the traditional Padróns," said Padrón. "We haven't had a price increase since 2007."

Padrón is working on a new cigar as well—for information on that release, see Tuesday's Cigar Insider.
