Indianapolis Votes Down Stricter Smoking Ban

Patrons in Indianapolis bars and bowling alleys won the right to continue smoking after the Indianapolis City-County Council struck down an ordinance Monday night that would have eliminated lighting up in those establishments.
The proposal, which exempted cigar lounges and hookah bars, could not muster the 15 votes needed to pass. The final vote was 13-12, with two councilors abstaining and two others absent from the vote.
In addition to restricting smoking from bars and bowling alleys, the ordinance sought to change the definition of a cigar bar by requiring these businesses to buy a Tobacco Specialty Store license.
Although the proposal was defeated, it can still be brought back at a later date.
