Posted: December 15, 2009
Modesta Fondeur, the executive vice president of tobacco and operations for General Cigar Co. and one of the most powerful women in the premium cigar industry will retire on December 31. She will continue as an adviser to the company.
"I have enjoyed a wonderful career over the past 34 years and am thankful for the opportunities that I have been given. I am looking forward to my retirement because I will have the luxury of continuing the work that I enjoy, while having more time to devote to my family and friends," said Fondeur in a statement.
Fondeur, a graduate of the Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra of Santiago, Dominican Republic, joined General in 1975, starting in the company's financial department. In the 1980s, she was appointed comptroller of the company's vast Dominican operations. She later began studying the manufacturing side of the business and in the 1990s moved into that division, becoming one of the very few females in that world.
