Cigar Shipments Increase to 337 Million -- Outlook for 2008 Uncertain

The premium cigar industry, which dipped in 2006, rebounded in 2007, with shipments of handmade cigars rising 7.8 percent to 337 million units. But the year ended poorly, with slumped holiday sales and concerns by many cigarmakers about the market in 2008 as the U.S. economy seems headed for recession.
Last year's rise in cigar shipments marked a turnaround from the unit decline posted in 2006. It was also the third year in a row that imports exceeded 300 million units, and put cigar shipments at their highest level in this decade.
