Churchill Ashtray May Go For £1,500 at Auction

A butter dish used by Sir Winston Churchill as a cigar ashtray is estimated to fetch at least £1,500 when it is auctioned off this Wednesday in Norfolk, England.

The dish was made in London in 1801 and used by Churchill as an ashtray at The Other Club, a political dining club co-founded in 1911 by the famous prime minister and former cover story of Cigar Aficionado. After Churchill died in 1965, his wife had the dish engraved and presented to Joyce Altham as a gift of appreciation for her service to the Churchill family.

According to an Eastern Daily Press report, the dish is currently owned by a relative of Altham who decided to put the dish on the block as part of a downsizing of her home.

Keys of Aylsham auction house will be putting the dish under the hammer during their three-day antique auction. For more details, check out www.keys24.com.
