A Fatter San Cristobal

Not long ago, 54 ring gauge cigars were considered exceptionally fat. No more. This week the new San Cristobal Papagayo XXL started shipping to American smokeshops, sporting a massive 60 ring gauge.

"It's a monster," said Ashton Distributors vice president Sathya Levin.

The Papagayo XXL is a beefed up version of the San Cristobal Papagayo, which measures 5 3/4 inches long by 55 ring. The Papagayo, which Ashton created about one year ago, "Instantly became one of our best-selling sizes," said Levin. It was the fattest parejo (or straight sided) cigar in the brand, which is made in Nicaragua at Pepin Garcia's My Father Cigars factory.

Consumers requested an even fatter smoke, so Ashton responded with the XXL. It comes in boxes of 21 cigars, and has a suggested retail price of $9.50.
