Stinky's New Ashtray
Posted: March 14, 2008
Stinky, the resourceful creator of household-product inspired smoking accessories, has revamped his signature ashtray into a new floor stand model.
Stinky's Floor Ashtray is quite literally an extension of the original steel punch-bowl-like receptacle, which was embraced by the cigar industry en masse in 2005. At 24 inches high, the floor stand ashtray is built to post up next to your favorite overstuffed leather chair for easy access while you recline, or to be readily available to receive a quick ash-on-the-go as you stroll through a tobacconist's showroom. Made completely out of stainless steel from top to bottom, the stand is clean, simple and functional. The original-sized ashtray is perched atop the stand's stem, outfitted with four stirrups or cigar rests -- although there is room for a lot more sticks if needed. The design is reminiscent of your basic cigarette stand ashtray once commonplace in most public buildings, only the Stinky receptacle is quite deep, fashioned with the large butts of cigars in mind instead of the petite ends of cigarettes.
The back story to the brand is a great example of the entrepreneurship often seen in the cigar industry. Stinky is the nickname of the owner and creator of the ashtray, -- although it could also describe the odor wafting from a basin full of dead cigars. The inspiration stems from Stinky's observation that most ashtrays don't allow enough space for multiple sticks, plus all the stuff that smokers tend to throw in along with ashes. The original piece was made from a secondhand silver bowl and three souvenir coins that Stinky found around his house and latched together to accommodate the accumulating pile of ash from his visiting buddies. Stinky, an engineer by training, ran with the idea, did further research, made some modifications, came up with a prototype and a manufacturer in India, and went to the 2004 Retail Tobacco Dealers of America trade show with the ashtrays in hand.
The Stinky's Floor Ashtray retails for $75 and is available at your local tobacconist or by visiting www.stinkycigar.com.
