A Texas-Sized Smoke From Alec Bradley
Posted: May 29, 2014
Where in the United States would a colossal, 7 inch by 70 ring gauge cigar be considered a lancero? Probably Texas. Which is why Alec Bradley is naming its first 7 by 70 the Texas Lancero.
While 7 by 70 cigars are becoming more common in the market, referring to it as a lancero is a playful nod to the common saying that "everything's bigger in Texas."
The decision to release such a large smoke was inspired by Alec Bradley's Texas sales representative Phil Kanaby, who maintained that giant, 7 by 70 cigars are exactly what smokers are asking for.
"We had a few blends for big cigars in our minds," said company president Alan Rubin, "but Phil gave us the push we needed to finally put a big cigar on the market. "
Like a traditional lancero, the Texas Lancero does indeed have a pigtail cap, but that's where the similarities end. With a thickness of 70 ring gauge, which is over an inch in diameter, the Texas Lancero is almost as big as a cardboard paper-towel tube. It's made by Placensia TDO in Honduras, who've managed to pack this oversized smoke with loads of Costa Rican, Honduran and Nicaraguan tobacco.
Packaged in big boxes of 50, each Texas Lancero will retail for $8 each, but you don't have to be in Texas to get one. Though named after the Lone Star State, these hefty smokes are not a Texas exclusive, and will be available to any retailer in the country by mid-June.
