Habanos S.A. Marketing Director Leaves

Ana López Garcia, the director of marketing operations for Cuba's tobacco monopoly, Habanos S.A., has left the company. In a short message, she told Cigar Aficionado she was leaving for "personal reasons." Her departure was confirmed by sources at Habanos.

Lopez had spent nearly 40 years working in the Cuban cigar industry. She reported that she remembered dealing with Alejandro Robaina, the famous Cuban tobacco grower, and was the person who introduced him to the cigar that bore his name.

She also had a wide range of experiences for the company, including overseeing the celebration by Habanos for the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Cuba by Christopher Columbus in 1992, and the cigars launched with that event, the 1492 and the Cohiba Siglo series of cigars. She had spent time in the United Kingdom during her tenure at the company.

In a long interview with Cigar Aficionado in 2011, she described the difficulties in putting together the ever-expanding list of Edición Limitadas, and the regional editions that each country in the Habanos universe can now request. She also explained how the company was enforcing new standards for Casas del Habanos, the company's flagship cigar shops operated by owners around the world.

Great focus on limited editions and packaging while the cigars have been losing identity and flavours.
