Best Bargain Cigars of 2013

G. Clay Whittaker
Posted: December 20, 2013

Though this year’s shrinking bargain list proves that it’s getting harder to find that super affordable smoke, there are still some great values to be had if you’re willing to look. We found 36 cigars rated 88 points or higher with a price tag no greater than $6.

What’s more, two of the cigars in this year’s list also appear on the Top 25 Cigars of 2013: the Buenaventura BV560 (No. 7) and the Asylum Premium 2012 Vintage 44x4 (No. 16). Arturo Fuente, Alec Bradley, Illusione, Oliva and Padrón are among the familiar names with great buys that carry suggested prices of less than $6.

I have become a fan of the Victor Sinclair 55 series I got some for a friend that was getting into cigars. I figured a Churchill sampler would be a good way to taste the differences wrappers can make since they all have the same binder/filler. I was quite surprised by the taste... they were great and cheep!! Thompson has a 55 series box pressed ten pack Robusto sampler for $34 worth a shot. I have lots of boxes of premium cigars, but these are great tasting and guilt free.

I really think this is a great list of great cigars from some of the best cigar makers in history! Keep is coming guys I really enjoy and trust your advice! Great smokes that you dont have to break the bank to get!

How come the Buenaventura has a rating of 92 on this page, but the exact same stick that is ranked number 7 on the top 25 cigars of 2013 has a rating of 94?

David Savona December 21, 2013 10:46am ET

Jason, excellent question. The 92 rating for the Buenaventura was the original rating in Cigar Aficionado or Cigar Insider that it received earlier in the year, the rating that made it one of our candidates for the extra rounds of Top 25 tasting. The 94 rating you see for the cigar in the Top 25 is a separate rating, the result of the final testing that we conduct for our Top 25 smokes. Being named a Top 25 cigar by our magazine requires a cigar to perform at a high level over repeated tests, not just one.

As much as I avoid annual "best" rankings, particularly wines and cigars, I must say this year's list is a fine line up. I might reorder some, but that's just my personal preference and tastes. Most of these do merit recognition and praise. The #1 cigar, the Monte 2 is flat out great. Kudos to all the skilled cigar makers of the world for a stellar year, to the editors of CA for such a great list, and to all my fellow BOTL in the forums who generously share their passion. Happy holidays, everyone.

PDR 1878 Capa Oscuro was one of my first smokes. I loved it then and still love it now!

I have noticed the same thing as Jason Palancia above, the BV 560 is listed here as a 92 points cigar, while as a the top 7 cigar it mentions a rating of 94!

Also interesting to note that 3 of the BuenaVentura cigars showing up in the list of Best Bargain, have different numbers due to the sizes. Hope the tobacco is also different otherwise there's something strange here : the BV 500 with a ring gage of 50 receives an 88 rating, and the biggest ring (60) one the BV600 receives 89 points. Only the BV 560 stands out of the crowd with either 92 or 94 ( to be confirmed).

I am not getting it. I would name this article: "best bang... for small cigars". It is obvious that small cigars are cheaper. I personally consider money wasted if I can't smoke the cigars for at least 45 min. So, this information has no value to me. How about full size prices (best bang... for 6x54, 6x52, 7x50, 6x60)?

Ani Bajaj — Moira, Goa, India,  —  December 26, 2013 1:04am ET

With reference to rzel2000@gmail.com, I was actually going to comment that since America tends to be a large ring size country, most articles and lists are based on 50+ ring sizes. Some of us actually prefer smaller ring sizes: 39 to 44, and it would be great to have a list of Top 25 for this group.

Steelmasterjohn@hotmail.com December 27, 2013 10:45am ET

Hi David and Gordon! Great list again this year. Could someone please dispel the rumor that you guys only smoke 1/3 of the cigar for these ratings? I am so tired of hearing this rumor! Could you please explain the ratings process or is there a link to page that does?

There are only 36 shown in the slide show.

Hi. It would be great to be able to print off this list . Is that possible?
Thanks anyway . I find this info invaluable .
