Fuente’s Cigar of Destiny

David Savona
Posted: September 24, 2013

Few brands, cigar or otherwise, can boast of reaching the milestone of 100 years. Fuente hit that mark in 2012, but a massive fire that laid waste to some of the company's oldest tobaccos delayed its celebratory plans. Now, with 2013 nearing a close, the Fuentes are putting the final touches on the commemorative Arturo Fuente Gran AniverXario Destino al Siglo.

"We were going to release these last year," said Carlos Fuente Jr. "We decided to hold them back, because of the fire."

Destino al Siglo, which means "a century of destiny," is a special cigar for the Fuentes. The smokes come packed in ornate reddish boxes, each designed to look like a book, a move Fuente made back in the 1980s with the creation of the Arturo Fuente Hemingway Masterpiece cigar. The cigars are packed 26 to the box, two rows of 13.

Destino al Siglo's wrapper is a different seed variety (Habano) than OpusX (Corojo), and it's grown in the open sunlight, making them different from the OpusX.

The cigars are made with wrappers from Chateau de la Fuente, the same farm where Fuente Fuente OpusX wrapper is grown. Destino al Siglo's wrapper, however, is a different seed variety (Habano) than OpusX (Corojo), and it's grown in the open sunlight, making them different from the OpusX, which has been sold since late 1995.

The Destino Al Siglo brand was supposed to launch in 2012, for the 100th anniversary of Fuente. But after the company lost so much tobacco in an August 2011 blaze, Fuente had to delay its celebration and take a new look at its blends.

You guys have the best pics in the business. Some blogs try but fail hard. Keep up the good work journalistically and visually.

One question, any news on the price? Sure they will be up there, just want to know of they will be in this atmosphere or the next universe. Would love to try these when they are released. Have smoked every Fuente cigar and enjoyed them all. My favorite cigar to this date is still the Opus X double corona. Congratulations to one of the most celebrated and famous cigar families in the world! Cent'anni!

Christian, thank you for the kind comments.

Frederick, prices are still to be determined at this point.

I remember hearing about the tragic fire that burned a lot of their prime aging tobacco but didn't know til now that the fire put their plans on hold for their 100th aniv. cigar. If anybody can rebound from such a fire and make another world class cigar, it would be the Fuente Family. Side Question for you David, do we know what sizes or just a special size will be made for the anniversary blend? Looking at the pic, it looks like a delicious box pressed toro.

I don't have all the dimensions but there are several sizes, including at least one perfecto. I've smoked a few, and so far so good, the samples are excellent.

David - any idea on the timing of the availability and the distribution? Will I be able to buy these in my local B&M and if so when? Looking forward to giving them a smoke.

I absolutely can not wait to try this smoke.I am a true fan of this brand and prefer Fuente over most and other brand. Love the box! Any idea on a release date? Might they be ready for the Big Smoke in Vegas?

Sent this link to my family stating, "So you want to know what Dad wants for Christmas?"
