EXCLUSIVE: Davidoff Releasing First Nicaraguan Puro

The project has been under wraps for over a year, but now Davidoff of Geneva is ready to talk about its new, upcoming brand—Davidoff Nicaragua.

In an unprecedented move for Davidoff of Geneva, the Swiss company is set to release its first Nicaraguan puro this summer at the annual IPCPR trade show. Davidoff CEO Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard sat down with Cigar Insider in New York City for an exclusive interview and disclosed the details surrounding the Davidoff Nicaragua brand.

The new line features a decade-old Nicaraguan Havana-seed Rosado wrapper around a distinct blend of tobaccos all culled from Nicaragua's major growing regions.

"We really wanted something that was different for Davidoff," said Hoejsgaard. "This is a major step for us to expand to a new territory. I wanted to develop products that were not necessarily origin specific or rigidly tied down to one specific place. Davidoff is a brand, not a territory. The challenge was to make sure that if we do a Nicaraguan puro, it has to have the Davidoff twist of sophistication."

By "Davidoff twist," Hoejsgaard is referring to pristine wrappers, perfect draw and burn, an overall product consistency and "the ability to smoke it to the very end."

Great story Greg. I'd be up for seeing what Davidoff can do with a Nic puro. I had no idea this was a plan from them. It's great to see you guys are always on the forefront of news. These days with all the so called "cigar bloggers" who seem to spread more confusion and misinformation than fact, I'm glad there is a trusted source I can count on. Keep it up!

I'm glad Davidoff is making the change, it's good to see a company that's is well respected to make such a big change and not be afraid.

Davidoff did blind tasting with selected aficionados last summer and I was lucky to be part of it. Except for one, the different blends were all excellent but one was just outstanding awesome. Favors ranged from chocolate, nuts, up to the light citrus notes. Let's hope for a price well below Cuban smokes to make the cigar one of my favorites.

It was the first time ever that Davidoff included customer feedback in the process of developing a new cigar line; and we were not told before the tasting that we were giving feedback to this upcoming new line. Though most of the testers tip was a Nicaraguan tobacco. I am definitely looking forward to July/August this year.
