Asylum 13 Adding Corojo Line

Christian Eiroa has harkened back to his roots for the newest addition to the Asylum 13 cigar, an all-Honduran blend covered by Corojo-seed wrapper grown on his family’s farm in the Jamastran Valley of Honduras.

Asylum 13 Authentic Corojo Seed will be packaged in 50-count boxes and will start shipping in April in two sizes (for now)—a five inch by 50 ring gauge and a six by 60 ring. The suggested retail price will be $5.10 and $6.10 per stick, respectively. Asylum 13 Corojo will be rolled in the Tabacos Rancho Jamastran factory in Honduras, where the Camacho brand is made, and Eiroa’s Fabricas Unidas company will distribute the line.

Whereas the original Asylum 13, created by Eiroa and Tom Lazuka, was all-Nicaraguan, the new version is a blend of tobaccos grown in Honduras, wrapped in Corojo leaf grown by Christian’s father, Julio, on their family farm. The Eiroas are known for their skill in growing Corojo-seed tobacco, a notoriously fickle leaf that is vulnerable to disease and yields fewer leaves per acre than newer hybrids.

“I have always liked the authentic Corojo-seed and I'm looking forward to using this wrapper on the Asylum 13 line,” said Lazuka.

Eiroa also said he is working on a 70- and 80-ring gauge version right now, but has yet to finalize the length that works best for the blend.

70 and 80 ring gauge? That's just stupid. I know it's the trend but cigar smokers are going the way of fast food "Super Size It" Forget about tasting flavors in tobacco just shove MORE down you're throat. But hey like McDonalds there are billions served so what do I know?

I have to agree with Christian's comment. The ring and length sizes are getting too big. My max has been the 60 gauge rings, but of late, I've been going to smaller gauge cigars. I'm starting to find that a lot of these mega-sized gauges don't retain any flavor, or the flavor peters out around the 1/3 mark.
