Box-Pressed Vintage Padilla in the Works

David Savona
Posted: February 7, 2013

Ernesto Padilla has a small-run, box-pressed smoke that should be ready for consumers in 90 days. Padilla Vintage Reserve will feature numbered bands and boxes, a broadleaf wrapper grown in Pennsylvania and an all-Nicaraguan binder and filler.

Padilla said the broadleaf wrapper wouldn’t be jet-black, but rather a reddish-brown color. “It’s not fully cooked,” he said while puffing a cigar in New York City during a visit to the Cigar Aficionado offices. Padilla said this particular wrapper wasn’t heated to the same level as other maduros. “This is a natural broadleaf. There’s not a lot of it, and working it takes more time.”

Despite the name “vintage,” the cigars won’t be pegged to a specific date, but this line will only be made in small batches at a time, given the constraints of the particular leaves he chose for the blend. The cigars are being rolled at Tabacalera Oliva S.A., the production arm of Oliva Cigar Co., which distributes all of Padilla Cigar Co.’s cigars.

The cigars will be packed without cellophane, which is how Padilla prefers his cigars, as he is a traditionalist. “I wanted a cigar without cellophane, and the broadleaf could handle that,” he said.

Padilla Vintage Reserve will come in three sizes, a Churchill, Torpedo and Double Robusto. Padilla thinks Oliva can produce around 500 boxes per month, and the cigars will retail for around $10 each, before taxes.
