Lots of Broadleaf in New La Dueña Cigar

If you’re into broadleaf tobacco, Janny Garcia has a cigar for you. Garcia, the daughter in the father-son-daughter team behind My Father Cigars, has a new brand called La Dueña. Spanish for “the female owner,” La Dueña was crafted to her tastes by her brother Jaime and Pete Johnson of Tatuaje cigars.
“It’s a collaboration between Pete Johnson and Jaime,” said Janny to Cigar Aficionado during an interview at the International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers trade show. “They tried to make something I really like. I didn’t want something too strong, and I like the sweetness of this wrapper.”
This wrapper is hearty, dark Connecticut broadleaf, the maduro wrapper tobacco known for earthy, robust flavor and a good amount of sweetness. La Dueñas have broadleaf not only as the wrapper, but also as the binder and as a component in the filler blend, which also has Nicaraguan tobacco.
La Dueñas are rolled at the Garcia’s My Father Cigars S.A. factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, where such brands as My Father, Flor de Las Antillas and Tatuaje Havana VI are rolled.
In a non-blind tasting of a La Duena Robusto No. 5 (5 by 50), the cigar had a medium- to full-strength level, with a spicy start and a woody, oily flavor. It also had that trademark broadleaf note of sweetness with earthy, mineral flavors, reminiscent of molasses.
The cigar comes in five sizes, they retail for $7.50 to $8.25 per cigar, and they are on sale now. This is the second prominent cigar project Janny Garcia is a part of this year. She has joined with Raquel and Patricia Quesada on the 3 Reynas project.
Look for a blind tasting of the La Dueña brand in an upcoming issue of Cigar Insider.
