Enjoy a Legal Smoke in a New York City Park
Posted: May 21, 2012
For the second straight year, Bill Paley, owner of La Palina Cigars, and the Cigar Rights of America are inviting all cigar enthusiasts to light up and protest New York City’s public parks smoking ban.
The second annual Legal Outdoor Smoke will take place this Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. in Samuel Paley Park, a privately owned park set aside for the people of New York 45 years ago by Paley’s father, William S. Paley, founder of CBS.
The park, which features plenty of trees and a striking waterfall on its back wall as well as a slew of tables and chairs, is located at 3 East 53rd Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues.
Last year, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg famously banned smoking in the city’s parks. While it remains illegal to smoke in public parks, the outdoor smoking ban does not extend to private parks, such as Paley’s.
The event is an open one. The only requirement to participate is to show a receipt from a New York City tobacconist dated anytime from May 20th to the 23rd.
