Last night, cigar icon and musician Avo Uvezian celebrated his 86th birthday 39 stories above ground level at New York City’s Grand Havana Room. To mark the occasion, Uvezian and Davidoff unveiled this year’s Avo Limited Edition cigar—La Trompeta.
It’s a tradition that’s been going for 11 years and showing no sign of slowing.
“I want at least 13 more of these “ said Uvezian, hoping to reach the milestone of 99 years. “When I came to New York, roaming the streets in 1947, playing piano, I never thought I’d be here all these years later smoking cigars. My wife called me and said ‘Why aren’t you home for your birthday?’ I told her, ‘I’m in New York, I AM home.’”
He was joined by Davidoff CEO Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard, Davidoff North America President James Young, and about 100 of Manhattan’s cigar-smoking cognoscenti who were treated to a live jazz trio, a three-course meal, Avo’s congenial company and of course, cigars.
The night kicked off with a tasting of last year’s Limited Edition Avo, the double-tapered, Avo 85th. It was served as a cigar to smoke during cocktail hour or during the first course of lump crab risotto. The cigar retrospective continued as Davidoff brought out Avo Limited Edition releases from 2009 and 2010, both brawny smokes hearty enough to accompany the filet mignon course. Finally, after Avo was presented with a giant cake resembling a cigar box, La Trompetta was revealed—a 6 1/2 inch by 54 ring torpedo.
It’s covered in a dark Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper decorated with three circles of lighter Ecuadoran Connecticut seed tobacco affixed to the cigar’s cover leaf, representing the three valves of a trumpet, hence the name. Inside, a Dominican Piloto binder holds together the blend of Dominican Criollo ligero, Piloto Cubano viso, San Vicente ligero, Dominican olor and Peruvian seco. The Trompetas are being rolled at the OK Cigars factory in the Dominican Republic.
Last night’s festivities marked the beginning of Avo’s national, nine-city cigar tour and the official Trompeta launch. His next stop will be Orlando, Florida, followed by Sarasota and eventually ending in Puerto Rico.
